I always enjoyed eating some pork belly after a ski trip, so we went to a restaurant near our place that specialized in it. Eating pork belly and soju after a few days of skiing was the best. My entire body ached like someone had beaten it to a pulp. So I had made up my mind to eat to my heart’s content, as a reward. I took a shot of soju, and it burned my throat.

“When did you start skiing? It’s honestly the sexiest thing I’ve ever seen you do,” I said to the husband.

“Since I was pretty young. Who have you been snowboarding with this whole time?”

“I’ve had a snowboarding partner since high school.”

“You went to an all-girls high school, right?”

“Why, are you worried that if it was co-ed, I would have been snowboarding with a guy? Would that be so wrong?”

“No, it’s not that. It’s just that you don’t talk much about your friends.”

Really? I thought, The only person you’ve ever introduced me to is your ex-wife. We’ve never spoken to each other about the people in our life—there’s no need to start now. You have this friend, and that friend, and that other friend from that place, right? Well, so do I. We are each entangled in webs of social relations—can’t we just stick to our own?

When it came to the husband and me, I wanted us to be two people who had met by chance on a cold day, and simply shared the heat of our bodies for a moment. When our marriage contract expired, we would need to meet other people. If there was too much heat now, in this moment, those that were yet to come would feel too cold. I quickly changed the subject.

“I heard you like Metallica?” I asked the husband.

“Who, me?”

“Oh, you don’t?”

“It’s Seo-yeon who likes Metallica. I’m more into Led Zeppelin, like you.”

I see, so that’s how it is. Seo-yeon, that little— It looked like Seo-yeon had been trying to use me to get the husband thinking about her. If she liked him that much, why even agree to a divorce? That hurt. I should have just continued to think of Metallica as the husband’s favorite band and played their music loudly from the speakers. That’s what she wanted, didn’t she? Then the husband would probably think of her.

But would the memories he thought of be good ones? What if the husband was trying really hard to forget Seo-yeon but I kept reminding him of her through the music and driving him insane? I could imagine him finally stumbling upon an oasis after wandering through the desert, only to see Seo-yeon shimmering in the haze of heat. Shit, this oasis is just a mirage, he would lament. It was like he was caught between a rock and a hard place. The two of them were really...something.

Also, what was up with that whole Zalman King thing? Was it like a tip for my sex life with the husband, a reward for playing Metallica for her? Whatever it was, it was a bit insulting.
